McKinney mom gives birth to 2 sets
of twins
Associated Press
DALLAS -- Two sets of identical twins were born to a McKinney
woman who says she's fought to keep her babies after some suggested
she should consider abortion or adoption.
Amanda Davis gave birth Friday to the quadruplets, two boys and
two girls, at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.
"I fought so hard because I knew I wanted them, even when they
told me it was four babies," Davis, 18, told The Dallas Morning
News in today's editions. "I wanted my babies, all of them."
One of her doctors said the odds of such a birth, in which each
child has a twin, are as much as one in 35 million.
The babies were born at 29 1/2 weeks' gestation and within three
minutes of one another, beginning at 8:56 a.m. Friday. Weighing
between 1 pound 14 ounces and 2 pounds 9 ounces, the infants were
placed in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, where they
were expected to remain for at least six weeks.
Doctors said the boys, Vincent Ryan and Raymond Zachery, were on
ventilators, while the girls, Ruby Abbygail and Alexis Rochelle,
were breathing on their own.
"They're still at risk of complications for the first 24 to 72
hours -- related to their prematurity and being multiples," said
Dr. Cody Arnold, the babies' neonatologist. "We can't relax until
they're off the ventilators."
Connie Franklin of McKinney, the grandmother, said family members
supported the mother's decision to raise the children, even though
they know it will not be easy.
"Her first doctor told her she should abort two of them," the grandmother
said.
Dr. H. Frank Andersen, who became Davis' obstetrician after the
first doctor dropped her case, said he admired how closely the young
woman followed his directions, which included bed rest since June.
